Tempeh & Jamu - Traditional Indonesian Fermentation Workshop

Due to the recent fires, this workshop will now be held in Trentham at Acre of Roses

As the weather will still be warm, it'll be the perfect time to explore ferments that thrive in natural heat – protein-rich, gut-friendly, and surprisingly light on the body.

In this hands-on workshop, we'll share the traditional techniques we learned in Java, making both tempeh and jamu (Indonesia's ancient medicinal drinks).

What you'll learn:

  • The complete process of making tempeh from scratch
  • How to inoculate, wrap, and incubate your own batch
  • Traditional jamu preparation – the healing drinks used by Indonesian royalty and locals for generations
  • Tips for creating the right environment at home for successful tempeh fermentation

What you'll take home:

  • Your own inoculated tempeh, ready to incubate and ferment at home
  •  jar of tempeh culture
  • Recipe card and fermentation guide
  • A taste of marinated, cooked tempeh so you know what you're aiming for
  • a bottle of your own Jamu

Our Java story: In 2023, Jeff and I travelled to Yogyakarta for an intensive course with a traditional tempeh maker (yes, we got a certificate haha). We visited local producers using techniques passed down through generations, and spent time with jamu makers whose recipes have been healing people for centuries. It was a really beautiful experience and gave us so much depth to  how we understand these ferments – and we can't wait to share that knowledge with you.
