Milk Kefir Icy Poles
The ultimate probiotic treat for kids (and adults)
Milk kefir icy poles are kinda sneaky. They taste like a treat, kids devour them happily, and you're delivering billions of beneficial bacteria straight into their guts. They're especially valuable after a course of antibiotics when you're trying to rebuild gut flora - slip them an icy pole for breakfast or after school and you're doing more good than a probiotic capsule ever could.
Unlike shop-bought icy poles these are just fruit, kefir, and a touch of honey or maple syrup. The kefir gives them a creamy, almost yoghurt-like texture that's far more satisfying than watery ice blocks.
We love Seed & Sprout's silicone icy pole moulds - they're Australian company, easy to pop out, and the silicone means no struggling with stuck icy poles. Their range includes different sizes perfect for little hands or adult portions.
Why milk kefir icy poles work:
The fermentation process in milk kefir creates natural probiotics, B vitamins, and makes the proteins more digestible. Kids who won't drink plain kefir will happily eat it frozen and sweetened with fruit. The cold doesn't damage the bacteria - they simply go dormant and wake up again in the warmth of the mouth and digestive system.
These are legitimate breakfast food. Seriously. Milk kefir icy poles contain more protein and beneficial bacteria than most breakfast cereals, with less sugar than juice. On hot mornings or when you're rushing out the door, hand over an icy pole and feel good about it.
Peach & Vanilla Milk Kefir Icy Poles
Makes 6-8 icy poles (depending on mould size)
This is my go-to recipe. Peaches and kefir are a match made in heaven - the sweetness balances the tang beautifully. Canned peaches work brilliantly here, making this a year-round recipe you can whip up any time.
Ingredients:
- 400g peaches (fresh, frozen, or canned - drained if canned)
- 2 cups milk kefir
- 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of cinnamon (optional)
Method:
- Blend peaches, kefir, honey, and vanilla until smooth
- Taste and adjust sweetness - remember it will taste less sweet when frozen
- Pour into icy pole moulds
- Insert sticks and freeze for at least 4-6 hours or overnight
- To release, run the moulds briefly under warm water
Pro tip: If using canned peaches, the syrup they come in is already sweet, so reduce or skip the added honey.
Berry Swirl Icy Poles
Ingredients:
- 1½ cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- 2 cups milk kefir
- 2-3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Method:
- Blend half the berries with the kefir, honey, and vanilla until smooth
- Roughly mash or chop the remaining berries
- Pour the smooth mixture into moulds, then spoon in the mashed berries for a swirled effect
- Insert sticks and freeze
Variation: Swap berries for mango, or try a tropical mix with pineapple and passionfruit.
Chocolate Banana Icy Poles
The one that converts kefir-sceptics
Ingredients:
- 2 ripe bananas
- 2 cups milk kefir
- 2 tablespoons raw cacao or cocoa powder
- 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Method:
- Blend everything until completely smooth
- Pour into moulds and freeze
- These taste like chocolate banana ice cream - no one will guess they're probiotic-packed
Honey Vanilla (The Simple Classic)
Ingredients:
- 2½ cups milk kefir
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
Method:
- Whisk everything together until honey is fully dissolved
- Pour into moulds and freeze
- This is perfect for kids who prefer simple flavours - it tastes like frozen vanilla yoghurt
Tips for Perfect Icy Poles
Sweetness: Kefir's natural tang means you need a bit more sweetness than you'd think. Taste the mixture before freezing and make it slightly sweeter than seems right - freezing dulls sweetness.
Texture: For extra-creamy icy poles, use kefir that's been fermented for 12-18 hours (milder and less separated). Longer-fermented kefir (24+ hours) works too but can be grainier.
Add-ins: Try stirring through chopped fruit, cacao nibs, or granola before freezing for texture.
Storage: Icy poles keep beautifully for 2-3 months in the freezer. Make a big batch when you've got excess kefir.
Post-antibiotics: If your child has just finished antibiotics, offer one of these icy poles daily for a week or two. The diverse bacterial strains in milk kefir help repopulate their gut microbiome faster than any supplement.
Breakfast icy poles: Yes, really. They're cold, creamy, protein-rich, probiotic, and far better than most breakfast options. On hot summer mornings, this is winning parenting.
These recipes work beautifully for our Milk Magic subscription families - when you're making fresh kefir regularly, turning some into icy poles means nothing goes to waste and you've always got a healthy treat on hand.
